Accessing Cues

Subtle behaviors that will both help to trigger and indicate which representational system a person is using to think with. Typical types of accessing cues include eye movements, voice tone, tempo, body posture, gestures, and breathing patterns.

Anchoring

The process of associating an internal response with some external trigger (similar to classical conditioning) so that the response may be quickly, and sometimes covertly, reaccessed.

Auditory

Relating to hearing or the sense of hearing.

Behavior

The specific physical actions and reactions through which we interact with the people and environment around us.

Behavioral Flexibility

The ability to vary one’s own behavior in order to elicit or secure a response from another person.

Calibration

The process of learning to read another person’s unconscious, nonverbal responses in an ongoing interaction by pairing observable behavioral cues with a specific internal response.

Calibrated Loop

Unconscious pattern of communication in behavioral cues of one person trigger specific responses from another person in an ongoing interaction.

Chunking

Organizing or breaking down some experience into bigger or smaller pieces. Chunking up involves moving to a larger, more abstract level of information. Chunking down involves moving to a more specific and concrete level of information. Chunking laterally involves finding other examples at the same level of information.

Congruence

When all of a person’s internal beliefs, strategies, and behaviors are fully in agreement and oriented toward securing a desired outcome.

Context

The framework surrounding a particular event. This framework will often determine how a particular experience or event is interpreted.

Criteria

The values or standards a person uses to make decisions and judgments.

Deep Structure

The sensory maps (both conscious and unconscious) that people use to organize and guide their behavior.

Four Tuple (or 4-tuple)

A method used to notate the structure of any particular experience. The concept of the four tuple maintains that any experience must be composed of some combination of the four primary representational classes - A,V,K,O - where A=Auditory, V=Visual, K=Kinesthetic, and O=Olfactory/Gustatory.

Future Pacing

The process of mentally rehearsing oneself through some future situation in order to help ensure that the desired behavior will occur naturally and automatically.

Gustatory

Relating to the sense of taste.

Installation

The process of facilitating the acquisition of a new strategy or behavior. A new strategy may be installed through any of the NLP™ skills or techniques and/or combination thereof.

Kinesthetic

Relating to body sensations. In NLP™ the term kinesthetic is used to encompass all kinds of feelings including tactile, visceral, and emotional.

Meta Model™

A model developed by John Grinder and Richard Bandler that identifies categories of language patterns that can be problematic or ambiguous. The Milton Model is the other side of this

Meta Program

A process by which one sorts through multiple generalizations simultaneously as such Meta Programs control how and when. A person will engage in any set of strategies in a given context.

Metaphor

Stories, parables and analogies.

Modeling

The act of creating a calculus which describes a given system.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming™ (NLP™)

The study of the structure of subjective experience and what can be calculated from that.

Olfactory

Relating to smell or the sense of smell.

Outcomes

Goals or desired states that a person or organization aspires to achieve.

Overlapping

Connecting Representational systems by going from one to another and another, etc.

Pacing

A method used by communicators to quickly establish rapport by matching certain aspects of their behavior to those of the person with whom they are communicating - matching or mirroring of behavior.

Parts

A metaphorical way of talking about independent programs and strategies of behavior.

Predicates

Process words (like verbs, adverbs, and adjectives) that a person selects to describe a subject. Predicates are used in NLP™ to identify which representational system a person is using to process information.

Rapport

The presence of trust, harmony, and cooperation in a relationship.

Representational Systems

The five senses: seeing, hearing, touching (feeling), smelling and tasting.

Representational System Primacy

The systematic use of one sense over the others to process and organize in a given context.

Secondary Gain

Where some seemingly negative or problematic behavior actually carries out some positive function at some other level. For example, smoking may help a person to relax or help them fit a particular self-image.

State

The total ongoing mental and physical conditions from which a person is acting.

Strategy

A set of explicit mental and behavioral steps used to achieve a specific outcome.

Sub-Modalities

The special sensory qualities perceived by each of the five senses. For example, visual sub-modalities include color, shape, movement, brightness, depth, etc., auditory submodalities include volume, pitch, tempo, etc., and kinesthetic sub-modalities include pressure, temperature, texture, location, etc.

Surface Structure

An utterance.

Synesthesia

The process of overlap between representational systems, characterized by phenomena like see-feel circuits, in which a person derives feelings from what they see, and hear-feel circuits, in which a person gets feelings from what they hear. Any two sensory modalities may be linked together.

T.O.T.E.

Developed by Miller, Galanter and Pibram, the term stands for the sequence Test-Operate-Test-Exit, which describes the basic feedback loop used to guide all behavior.

Transderivational Search

The act of locating through meaning(s) which may not be explicit or implicit in a surface structure.

Translating

Connecting the meaning of one representation to the same meaning in another representation.

Visual

Relating to sight or the sense of sight.

Well-Formedness Conditions

In NLP™, a particular outcome is well-formed when it is: (1) stated in positives, (2) initiated and maintained by the individual, (3) ecological - maintains the quality of all rapport systems, and (4) testable in experience - sensory based.

by Paul McKenna

There is an old saying: “The only person who likes changes is a wet baby”. It’s certainly true for some people and definitely true for some NLP’ers. In 1993 we sat down with Richard Bandler to talk about what was going on with people using NLP. Richard said: “So many of these people are just copying what they’ve heard from someone else who copied it from someone else who copied it from me - I can’t believe people think that 21 days or 24 days or any amount of days is what makes a practitioner training. It’s who is teaching, how they are teaching and what they are teaching.”

So we decided to start again from “a clean slate” - reconstruct how to deliver the practitioner, remove some of the “mistakes of personal history” which Richard speaks about but most importantly to ensure that the material is delivered using the best methods and latest applications of NLP technology available.

For some reason many people seem to believe that modelling - one of the methodologies used in creating NLP is merely copying what someone else does and coding it in some hopefully usable form. But modelling, as it is practised by Richard Bandler, is more than mere copying. Modelling for NLP’ers is the discovery of organising principles behind a group of selected behaviours and then applying those principles to create something new - perhaps something not seen before. For example, some people have tried to say that there is nothing new in the Meta model, that it is all transformation grammar. Not true, transformational linguists come up with descriptions of behaviour (language) in order to explain how language structures are generated through a set of equations common to all languages. But they do not tell you how to do things with language, how to record information from a person’s statement of reality - their model. They do not show you how to calculate either a question or a response which will require another person to move outside of their current model.

The Meta model is all of these and more. The Meta model is a creation utilising principles from transformational grammar, symbolic logic, and calculus (among other things) to be able to do something different - beyond what was done before. So much of what people think they know about NLP is only on the surface. That’s why the old NLP’ers are wondering how its possible to learn the practitioner in 7 days when it took them 21. There are several reasons; most people teaching NLP trained in the 70’s or 80’s using the old models and they don’t understand how Richard’s new technology for ‘Accelerated Unconscious Installation’T works. They think because they spent longer learning something they know it better. Well, if you bought a computer in the 70’s it would be big, slow and costly. However, nowadays they are smaller, faster, cheaper.

The traditional ways of teaching are far too slow and boring, using them it would be impossible to do it in 7 days.

Most of the traditional teachers of NLP are unable to do it for a start.

That’s why ‘Accelerated Unconscious Installation’T is the future for teaching NLP. Richard Bandler compares the old way of teaching small chunks of information one step at a time to ‘masturbating one stroke a day’. 21 days was a figure that Richard made up in the 70’s, but times have changed. However, we can understand why taking such a long time appeals to some institutes because it means they can charge you more money.

The other problem with traditional NLP training is that people learn about NLP and not how to do it. When you train using Richard’s latest technology often you find you start to do truly amazing things, but you don’t necessarily know how you did it. One gentleman who attended our Danish trainings, upon returning to work found that one of his colleagues had also been on an NLP training, although it was the old 21 type. Interestingly his colleague could explain everything about NLP, but she could hardly do any of it. He, on the other hand could demonstrate everything she talked about, but he couldn’t necessarily explain it. What would you prefer to be able to do?

Cast your mind back to Milton Erickson - what was the first response he would make to someone asking a question in a teaching context. His most usual response was a story and somewhere along the line a trance would develop and learning and change would just seem to happen. Trance, whether spontaneous or induced, is the natural place for learning.

As soon as the conscious mind is in the way, learning slows to a crawl - only a few tiny concepts at a time pass through the filter of conscious attention and you ended up making the new things exactly like what had come before.

But human beings are natural, quick learners when given the appropriate environment. That’s why we teach by doing - whole patterns first, then details - keep the conscious mind engaged in enjoyment and challenge and build skill without too much conscious interference.

The old institutes who are using the 21 day model are using unconscious installation, however it’s not accelerated or fun. Instead what they are installing is that it takes ages to learn and change. Moreover, many of the ‘woolly jumper brigade’ are also inadvertently installing the idea that NLP is some kind of boring intellectual doctrine. We heard about one NLP training company who recently failed half the people who attended their practitioner. The best part is that they believe it’s because ‘their standards are so high’. They don’t appreciate the irony that their standards are so high that not even they are competent to teach them. People like that could take 21 years to teach a practitioner and it wouldn’t make any difference.

Anyone who believes that the next ten years for NLP are going to be just like the last is in for a big surprise! The new seven day practitioner utilises the very best of old NLP with best of the new.

Some people will take 21 days to teach the practitioner - because they have to. Others will be able to do it in 10 days. It isn’t the number of days, but the quality of the experience that makes the difference. Right now more people are choosing the new 7 day practitioner above any other NLP training. If you haven’t discovered why that is yet, and your curious, adventurous and open-minded then it might be right for you.

ABBOTT: Mac?

COSTELLO: I told you, my name’s Lou.

ABBOTT: What about Windows?

COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?

ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?

COSTELLO: I don’t know. What will I see when I look in the windows?

ABBOTT: Wallpaper.

COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.

ABBOTT: Software for Windows?

COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write proposals, track expenses and run my business. What have you got?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?

ABBOTT: I just did.

COSTELLO: You just did what?

ABBOTT: Recommend something.

COSTELLO: You recommended something?

ABBOTT: Yes.

COSTELLO: For my office?

ABBOTT: Yes.

COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yes, for my office!

ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.

COSTELLO: I already have an office and it has windows! OK, lets just say, I’m sitting at my computer and I want to type a proposal. What do I need?

ABBOTT: Word

COSTELLO: What word?

ABBOTT: Word in Office.

COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.

ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.

COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?

ABBOTT: The Word you get when you click the blue “W.”

COSTELLO: I’m going to click your blue “W” if you don’t start with some straight answers. OK, forget that. Can I watch movies on the Internet?

ABBOTT: Yes, you want Real One.

COSTELLO: Maybe a real one, maybe a cartoon. What I watch is none of your business. Just tell me what I need!

ABBOTT: Real One.

COSTELLO: If its a long movie I also want to see reel 2,3 &4. Can I watch them?

ABBOTT: Of course.

COSTELLO: Great, with what?

ABBOTT: Real One.

COSTELLO; OK, I’m at my computer and I want to watch a movie. What do I do?

ABBOTT: You click the blue “1.”

COSTELLO: I click the blue one what?

ABBOTT: The blue “1.”

COSTELLO: Is that different from the blue “W”?

ABBOTT: The blue “1″ is Real One and the blue “W” is Word.

COSTELLO: What word?

ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.

COSTELLO: But there’s three words in “office for windows”!

ABBOTT: No, just one. but it’s the most popular Word in the world.

COSTELLO: It is?

ABBOTT: Yes, but to be fair, there aren’t many other Words left. It pretty much wiped out all the other Words out there.

COSTELLO: And that word is real one?

ABBOTT: Real One has nothing to do with Word. Real One isn’t even part of Office.

COSTELLO: Stop! Don’t start that again. What about financial bookkeeping, you have anything I can track my money with?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: That’s right. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?

ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.

COSTELLO: What’s bundled to my computer?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?

ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.

COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?

ABBOTT: One copy.

COSTELLO: Isn’t it illegal to copy money?

ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.

COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?

ABBOTT: Why not? THEY OWN IT!

COSTELLO: How do I turn my computer off??

ABBOTT: Click on “START”……..
